“Rigorous Schools and Classrooms: Leading the Way”

An On-Line Workshop

Dr. Barbara Blackburn

October 19, 2021

8:30am – 2:30pm

Barbara Blackburn has dedicated her life to improving motivation, instruction, and rigor for students and teachers alike. She is ranked among the Top 30 Global Gurus in Education and has authored over 20 books that include concrete examples based on decades of experience as a teacher, professor, and consultant. She has taught early childhood, elementary, middle, and high school students and has served as an educational consultant for three publishing companies. As President of Blackburn Consulting Group, Dr. Blackburn speaks at state, national, and international conferences; she regularly presents workshops for teachers and administrators in elementary, middle, and high schools. She regularly works with schools and districts in the areas of rigor, assessment, differentiation, student motivation, engagement, and leadership.  She holds a master’s degree in school administration and is certified as both a teacher and a school principal in North Carolina. She received her Ph.D.in Curriculum and Teaching from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Are you wondering about rigor?  For many, it is a negative term that means “harder” or “double the work”.  Barbara’s internationally recognized, practical, teacher-friendly concept of instructional rigor includes high expectations, scaffolding for instruction, and demonstration of learning.

During this workshop Dr. Blackburn not only clearly defines rigor, but also provides numerous examples of instructional strategies to raise the level of rigor and can be immediately implemented in classrooms across multiple content areas and grade levels. Join us for a day of learning and leave with an action plan for how to initiate and support the changes that will increase rigor in your school!

Workshop Outcomes:

  • To understand and apply the key components of instructional rigor:

  • To understand and apply practical classroom applications and examples of observational elements of rigor, including differentiating for all students.

  • To understand characteristics of rigorous assessments, evaluate sample assignments for rigor, and recommend revisions for improvement.

  • To understand practical leadership applications in the areas of culture, vision, and ownership.
