The Standards for Mathematical Practice elevate students’ learning of math from knowledge to application and bring rigor to our math classrooms. But how can we incorporate the Practices into our teaching and ensure that our students develop these critical skills? In this workshop, Sue O’Connell unpacks each of the eight Practices and provides a wealth of practical ideas and activities to help you integrate them into your existing math program.
Participants’ learning outcomes:
Identify the key elements of the practice standards and how to bring each standard to life in your classroom.
Identify ways to support the development of students’ problem-solving and reasoning skills.
Examine strategies for justifying solutions and processes.
Explore ways to include varied math models as a component of classroom explorations.
Identify classroom tasks that build math vocabulary to promote precise communication.
Gather creative ways to prompt students’ observations and insights about math concepts and processes.
