Navigating the Legal Issues Related to AI Use
in Our Schools
A Virtual Half-Day Workshop Presented by Darcy Kriha
Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026
8:45am – 11:45am
As Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) continues to be more prevalent in our
day-to-day lives and is quickly becoming a tool used regularly by
educators and students, it is essential to understand the legal
ramifications. While AI has many benefits, it also brings numerous
challenges. This workshop will address many of the legal
considerations regarding data privacy, non-discrimination,
cyberbullying, academic integrity, and the need for human oversight
and accountability. Participants will gain an understanding of how AI
interplays with Illinois and federal laws such as the
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Illinois
School Student Records Act (ISSRA), Children’s Online Privacy
Protection Act (COPPA), and the Student Online Personal
Protection Act (SOPPA). This session will also review the
Department of Education’s July 2025 guidance on the use of AI in
schools and provide recommendations for next steps in using AI in
a responsible and legally compliant manner.
Participants will:
- Understand of the legal considerations for staff use of AI
- Understand the legal considerations for student use of AI
- Understand actionable steps districts can take to use AI in an
effective and legally compliant manner.
