Creating Mathworlds that Students Love to Visit and Hate to Leave
Math teachers do much more than teach math ideas. They create entire math worlds—worlds with destinations that feel inviting or hostile, paths that feel wide or narrow, feedback that feels interesting and helpful or dehumanizing and mystifying. We will learn from people who build the worlds that students love to visit and hate to leave—game designers and storytellers. We will learn their secrets for creating worlds that are educational and enjoyable, and bring their techniques back to our classrooms to change a student’s relationship to math.
Objectives:
Questions before answers. Learn how effective mathematical worldbuilders first invite students to learn.
Turn math into aspirin for a student’s headache. Learn how effective mathematical worldbuilders create a need for new learning.
Interpret rather than evaluate. Learn how mathematical worldbuilders give effective feedback to learners on their journey.
Modern tools for mathematical worldbuilding. Learn how to use technology to more effectively create a mathworld.
Students as worldbuilders themselves. Learn how to invite students to become mathematical worldbuilders themselves and transform their mathematical identity.
Dan Meyer taught high school math to students who didn’t like high school math. He has advocated for better math instruction on CNN, Good Morning America, Everyday With Rachel Ray, and TED.com. He earned his doctorate from Stanford University in math education and is the Chief Academic Officer at Desmos, where he explores the future of math, technology, and learning. He has worked with teachers internationally and in all fifty United States. He was named one of Tech & Learning’s 30 Leaders of the Future
