Bullying is a term that continues to be used more frequently. But, how do we actually define bullying? What are a school districts responsibilities related to bullying? This session will provide an overview of legal requirements, best practices, and practical applications related to notifications, investigations, and responses to bullying behavior. This session will also address the intersection of bullying and special education law by discussing when bullying may constitute a denial of a free appropriate public education or trigger a district’s child find responsibilities.

Participants’ learning outcomes:

  • Identify school districts’ legal requirements under Illinois law related to bullying
  • Identify the intersection of bullying and special education laws
  • Discuss effective strategies for complying with these requirements in a student-centered and legally defensible manner

She has experience in a wide array of issues including special education, student discipline, and student rights and responsibilities, and enjoys working with educators to help blend legal requirements and best practices to improve outcomes for students. Cassie remains an educator today as an adjunct professor at Loyola University Chicago in both the school of education and  theschool of law.
